Montbenoit and Pontarlier ski resorts access map

Located in forested land stretching as far as Switzerland, this area offers a wide range of activities. It provides cross-country skiing with trails accessing the "Grande Traversee du Jura", a 200 km cross-country trail across the Jura Massif, crossing from north to south the departments of the Doubs, Jura and Ain. Downhill skiing is also available with some ski lifts.
The city of Pontarlier, capital of Haut-Doubs (High Doubs) and the town of Montbenoit (15 km north), are both surrounded by ski areas and are just a few kilometers drive away. They offer a wide range of facilities and activities.

Ski Areas around Pontarlier

These ski areas surround the city of Pontarlier:

  • Les Verrieres de Joux, Altitude: 909 to 1,175 m
    11 km from Pontarlier, this village of 360 inhabitants is located near the trail of the "Grande Travesée du Jura".
    Cross-country skiing: 7 km of groomed track and skating trails (1 green and 1 blue)
    2 sled areas
  • Larmont, Altitude: 1,150 to 1,300 m.
    This site, on the outskirts of the city of Pontarlier, is well suited for both downhill and cross-country skiing. It also provides 2 sled areas and a pedestrian trail.
    Cross-country skiing: 4 trails (2 green, 1 blue, 1 red) for a total of 33 km of trails connected to the Swiss site of Cernets and to the trails accessing the "Grande Traversée du Jura".
    Downhill skiing: 3 ski lifts
    Snowshoeing: 2 trails available (2.5 and 7 km)
    Other activities: introduction to dogsledding and sled rides with Alaskan Husky dogs.
  • Malmaison, Altitude: 990 to 1,080 m
    Site only 4 km from Pontarlier.
    Cross-country skiing: 4 trails (1 green, 1 blue, 1 red and 1 black) for a total of 35 km of trails (competition trails and lighted trail at night) connected to the nordic site of Haut Saugeais Blanc.
    Sled slopes
    Snowshoeing: 2 trails available (3 and 4 km)
  • Laveron, Altitude: 1,000 to 1,050 m
    Located above the left bank of Lake Saint Point, this site offers some wonderful and easy ski trails in the forest.
    Cross-country skiing: 51 km of groomed track and skating trails starting at La Planee, Les Granges-Dessus, Bonnevaux and Vaux-et-Chantegrue

Ski areas around Montbenoît

This ski area bordering Switzerland, also called Saugeais Republic, is located between the cities of Morteau and Pontarlier. The Saugeais area offers more than 200 km of cross-country trails (including the "Grande Traversée du Jura"), snowshoeing trails, sled areas, dogsled rides or horse-driven sled rides. The Saugeais area consists of four ski areas:

  • Haut Saugeais Blanc, Altitude: 1,100 m
    Bordering the Swiss border and connecting with the Malmaison site.
    Cross-country skiing: 50 km of cross-country trails with 6 km for skating style
  • Arc-sous-Cicon, Altitude: 800 to 1,100 m
    The site is divided in two areas: the village of about 530 inhabitants located 18 km northwest of Montbenoît at an altitude of 809 m and the Crêt Monniot, altitude 1,140 m, which offers a beautiful panoramic view.
    Cross-country skiing: 35 km of trails with 7 km for skating style
  • La Chaux de Gilley, Altitude: 890 to 1,040 m
    Village where the large farms with typical regional architecture are an important part of the landscape.
    Cross-country skiing: 51 km of trails with 30 km for skating style. The trails are perfect for the whole family.
  • Gilley, Altitude: 865 to 955 m
    Village of 1,250 inhabitants which has kept most of its traditions.
    Cross-country skiing: 35 km of trails with 20 km for skating style. One lighted trail is available for night time skiing
    Downhill skiing: 2 ski lifts, ideal area for beginners.
