General Information


Located in the Doubs department, between Switzerland and the Jura department, this area belongs to the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park and includes 13 villages retaining traditional character at an altitude ranging from 920 to 1,420 meters. The mountainous area of "Mont Noir" and the north part of the Risoux forest in the Jura Massif offer numerous trails and slopes for cross-country and downhill skiing.
Between Mouthe and Chapelle-des-Bois, the high quality of the 259 km of cross-country skiing trails has turned this area into a popular ski place.

Mouthe

This village of about 950 inhabitants is the finish line of the famous Transjurassienne, an international cross-country ski race. It is the home of Fabrice Guy, olympic champion in nordic ski.
Altitude: 935 to 1,420 m
Downhill skiing: 4 slopes (1 red, 1 blue, 1 green, 1 for beginners) and 3 ski lifts
Cross-country skiing: 65 km groomed track and skating trails for all ski levels(1 black, 1 red, 1 blue, 2 green), 1 lighted trail for night time skiing
Dogsledding: A 10 km trail available at Les Pontets (3.5 km from Mouthe). Sled rides with Nordique Aventure.
Snowshoeing: trails available in Mouthe and Les Pontets
Other activities: indoor swimming pool

Chapelle des Bois

Located in the north of the Haut Jura Regional Natural Park and along the Swiss border, this village of Haut-Doubs is in the heart of the largest cross-country skiing massif in Western Europe. Its location at the foot of the Risoux forest ensures a remarkable amount of snow. It is the departure point for the Transju, a 25 km cross-country ski race in classic style preceding the Transjurassienne.

Its 250 inhabitants have kept the authenticity of their village, to witness:

  • the museum "Maison Michaud", a typical 17th Century farm, with the large chimney called "tuyé" where the meat used to be smoked. Organic bread is made and sold there.

  • a distillery of gentian flowers

  • a cheese making factory of morbier cheese and goat cheese.


Altitude: 1,087 m
Cross-country skiing: 110 km groomed track and skating trails for all ski levels, offer a network of 16 itineraries. This network connects with the other villages nearby. One lighted trail for night time skiing
Dogsledding: a 6 km trail. The center "Equipages Adam's" offers introduction to sled driving, sled rides and 2 to 5 days raids.
Snowshoeing: 5 trails available for all levels and 2 itineraries for pedestrians
Other activities: Ice-skating on lakes (Lac des Mortes is 3 km away), when weather permits. Downhill skiing 7 km away. Indoor swimming-pool in Morbier (10 km away).

Chaux-Neuve

Located between Mouthe and Chapelle-des-Bois, the village of about 260 inhabitants has an important ski jump stadium hosting every year some worldwide sporting events.
Altitude: 1,091 m
Downhill skiing: 3 slopes (1 red, 1 blue, 1 baby for beginner) and 2 ski lifts
Cross-country skiing: 68 km groomed track and skating trails for all ski levels
Ski jumping: a stadium with 3 ski jumps (90, 57 and 28 m)
Dogsledding: at the Parc Polaire, a specialized center
Snowshoeing: 3 and 5 km marked trails
Other activities: Biathlon Laser (combination of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting). Ski-joring (skiing pulled by a horse). Visit of the cheese factory.
