General Information



This mountain area is the highest inhabited zone of the Jura Massif, at the border of the Jura and Ain departments. It consists of 9 villages. Septmoncel, Les Moussieres, Lajoux and La Pesse are the main ones. The area offers the most impressive panoramic views of the surrounding Jura mountains. Various winter sports activities can be enjoyed. It is well suited for cross-country skiing with 240 km of trails and its downhill skiing slopes are best for beginners and intermediates.
Hautes Combes belong to the Regional Natural Park of Haut Jura. Saint Claude, with 13,000 inhabitants and at an altitude of 440 m, is the main city and is the ideal place to start exploring the Haut-Jura.

Septmoncel

Village of about 670 inhabitants on the main road going from St-Claude to Geneva.
Altitude: 1,000 to 1,350 m
Downhill skiing: 3 slopes (1 green, 1 blue, 1 red) and 3 ski lifts located at "Le Manon" site, few kilometers from the village
Cross-Country skiing: 7 km of trails at "Le Manon" site

Les Molunes

The village of about 120 inhabitants is one of the most scattered along the "Combe Simard".
Altitude: 1,130 to 1,270 m
Cross-Country skiing: 24 km groomed track and skating trails for all ski levels
Snowshoeing: 2 trails available for all levels as well as for pedestrians

Les Moussieres

The village of about 165 inhabitants combines tourism and tradition at the "Maison du fromage" (Cheese House).
Altitude: 1,130 to 1,270 m
Downhill skiing: 2 slopes (1 green, 1 blue) and 2 ski lifts
Cross-Country skiing: 18 km groomed track and skating trails for all ski levels
Snowshoeing: trails available for all levels as well as for pedestrians
Dogsledding: for the day or for a 2 to 5 days raid
Other activities: Visit to the "Maison des Fromages" (Cheese House), for step by step process of cheese making for the "Comté" and "Bleu de Gex" cheeses. Open to the public all year around.

Bellecombe

Agricultural village of about 90 inhabitants located close to Les Moussieres.
Altitude: 1,130 to 1,270 m
Cross-Country skiing: 25 km groomed track and skating trails for all ski levels
Dogsledding: discovery or initiation

Lajoux

Village of about 220 inhabitants, home to the "Maison du Haut-Jura", the headquarter of the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park.
Altitude: 1,180 to 1,450 m
Downhill skiing: 2 slopes (1 green, 1 blue) and 1 ski lift
Cross-Country skiing: 28 km groomed track and skating trails for all ski levels
Snowshoeing: trails available for all levels as well as for pedestrians

La Pesse

This dynamic village of about 260 inhabitants, 20 km from St-Claude, is the favorite site for dogsledding.
Altitude: 1,160 to 1,320 m
Downhill skiing: 1 slope and 1 ski lift
Cross-Country skiing: 60 km groomed track and skating trails for all ski levels, some with steep slopes
Dogsledding: 5, 10 and 15 km well-maintained tracks. A shelter for the mushers is located near the village
Snowshoeing: 3 trails available for all levels as well as for pedestrians
